Tap a day to jump straight to its rituals. The pill bar above stays pinned as you scroll, so the structure of Hajj is always one tap away. Currently you have to scroll through ten cards to get to Muzdalifah.

Each ritual is a one-line header by default. Tap a row to expand the four-part body; tap again to collapse. Default state: collapsed. Multiple rows can be open at once so you can compare two rituals side-by-side.

The example below shows the first six Umrah rituals collapsed, with Tawaaf (Umrah 3) expanded to demonstrate the four-part body.

The act

Beginning from the Black Stone corner, walk seven times counter-clockwise around the Kaʿbah with the Kaʿbah to your left. With each pass of the Black Stone, raise your right hand toward it and say "Allāhu akbar". The first three circuits, men perform raml (a brisk pace, shoulders bare). Between the Yamāni corner and the Black Stone, recite Qur'an 2:201.

The Sunnah

Touch (istilām) the Black Stone if you can without harming others; otherwise point to it. Walk in iḍṭibāʿ (right shoulder uncovered) until tawaaf ends. Do not face the Kaʿbah while making any duʿāʾ — face the direction of travel. Make supplication freely throughout; there is no fixed text outside the verse at the Yamāni corner.

Where scholars differ

Ḥanafī, Mālikī, Shāfiʿī, Ḥanbalī all agree tawaaf is a Rukn (missing it invalidates Umrah). They differ on whether wuḍū' is a condition or a Sunnah: the majority (Mālikī, Shāfiʿī, Ḥanbalī) class it as a condition; the Ḥanafī school holds it is a wajib whose omission requires a sacrifice but does not invalidate the tawaaf.

Pilgrim tips (2024 advisory consensus)

Inner-ring tawaaf is reserved for the elderly, ill, or pilgrims in groups during peak hours. Wheelchair tawaaf has a dedicated upper-level circular path. Avoid the Mataf 11 AM – 4 PM — heat reflects off the marble. Use the Tawaaf counter (bottom nav) to track circuits — it has a manual-mode fallback if compass detection fails.

Page state — which rows are open — is preserved in localStorage so a pilgrim returning to the page lands where they left off. Deep links like #tawaaf auto-open the matching ritual. No content downloaded from the server; everything is already on the page.

C · 24 — Rukn / Wajib / Sunnah / Custom chips

Each ritual card gains per-step ruling-level chips so the pilgrim can tell at a glance what's required, recommended, or merely customary. Below: HAJJ 4 (Wuquf at Arafat) rendered in the new pattern.

Hajj · 4 9 Dhul-Ḥijjah · after Dhuhr to sunset

Wuquf at Arafat — the climax of Hajj

"Hajj is Arafah" said the Prophet ﷺ (Tirmidhi 889, Abū Dāwūd 1949). Missing the standing means missing Hajj.

Rukn
Be present within the boundary of Arafat at any moment from Dhuhr on 9 Dhul-Ḥijjah until Fajr of the 10th.
All four schools agree this is a pillar — missing it invalidates the Hajj.
Wajib
Remain in Arafat until sunset of the 9th.
Mālikī, Shāfiʿī, Ḥanbalī: required, missing it requires a dam (sacrifice). Ḥanafī: same in practice though classed as "wajib" specifically.
Sunnah
Combine and shorten Dhuhr & Asr at Arafat after the imam's khutbah.
Muslim 1218 (Jabir's hadith). Pray each as two rakʿah, back to back, with one adhān and two iqāmahs.
Custom
Climbing Jabal al-Raḥmah (Mountain of Mercy).
Cultural — not from the Sunnah. Valid wuquf is anywhere inside the boundary, including next to your tent.

The chip colors derive from the brand — green for required (Rukn / Wajib), gold for recommended (Sunnah), neutral gray for customary additions. Same chip system applies to every ritual card.

C · 26 — Common mistakes

Before you go

The mistakes pilgrims describe most often in 2024 accounts. Surfaced as quiet "before you go" reading on the rituals page — no scolding, no alarm.

Leaving Arafat before sunset

Some pilgrims, eager to beat traffic to Muzdalifah, leave Arafat before sunset on the 9th. All four schools require staying until sunset. If you must move early, you still owe a dam (sacrifice). Leave only after Maghrib (which you'll combine with Isha at Muzdalifah).

Standing just outside the Arafat boundary

Arafat's boundary is marked but easy to miss. Wādī ʿUranah is outside Arafat — many pilgrims who camp near the border don't realize their tent isn't inside the boundary. Walk into the marked area before sunset to make valid wuquf.

Stoning before Dhuhr on 11-13 Dhul-Ḥijjah

On day 10 you can stone any time after sunrise. On days 11, 12, 13 stoning is invalid before Dhuhr. Wait. Many pilgrims rush before Dhuhr to avoid heat — better to stone after Maghrib or even at night, all of which is valid.

Stoning out of order on the days of Tashreeq

Days 11-13 require Sughra (smallest) → Wusta (middle) → Kubra (Aqabah) in order. The pebble counter mockup at /mockups/jamarat.html handles this — it won't let you advance to Wusta without completing Sughra.

Treating customs as obligations

Climbing Jabal al-Raḥmah, kissing the Black Stone in a specific rhythm, raising hands at every line of the tawaf duʿāʾ — all customary, none required. The Sunnah is wide; cultural additions are not part of it. Treating them as essential creates anxiety the religion doesn't ask of you.

Forgetting to stop talbiyah

Talbiyah stops at the first pebble that strikes Jamrah al-Aqabah on 10 Dhul-Ḥijjah. Many pilgrims either stop too early (when leaving Arafat) or continue too long. The talbiyah window mockup at Today screen surfaces this as a header chip.
